Water Damage Restoration: Assessing
Damages to Your Home
Water damage is nothing new for
homeowners. It can occur as a result of burst pipe, leaky roof, flood or even
due to an effort to put out a fire incident. However, as soon as your business
or home experiences water damage, it is important to act quickly irrespective
of the source in order to contain the damage.
Water damage restoration should be done
by professional companies so as to restore your property back to its original
state before the damage. The company is expected to come in, carry out an
assessment of the damage and place a value on your loss and service to restore
your property. The water damage restoration company should be able to
categorize the water damage you have from a scale of 1 to 4. For example, a
level 1 kind of damage portrays light water damage to one area or a room where
the carpet is not saturated. Level 2 involves at least one entire room with a
saturated carpet and wicking of walls up to 24 inches. The overhead damage such
a leaky ceiling and saturated room constitutes level 3 while level 4 is the
highest damage which is reserved for deep saturations like what you have in flood
cases.

That aside, the water damage
restoration expert, may also need to determine the category of water
contamination after assessing the damage to your home. For example, some water
restoration companies may classify category 1 contamination as clean water such
as from a broken water pipe. Category 2is that which begins with some degree of
contamination and could cause sickness or discomfort if consumed by humans. As
with Category 1 water, time and temperature can cause Category 2 water to
become progressively more contaminated. And Category 3 water is that
which is highly contaminated and could cause death or serious illness if
consumed by humans. Examples: sewage, rising flood water from rivers and
streams, ground surface water flowing horizontally into homes.
Once these assessments are done, then
your water damage restoration company will assemble a team to get the water
out. In some cases, it may require pumping water out of the home or extracting
water from surfaces. Removing affected building materials which cannot be
restored, disinfecting and cleaning surfaces and finally setting up equipment
to structurally dry out the property.
